Rainbow Farm is a local (Maryland and Delaware) provider of Oriental and Asiatic lily bulbs, plants, and fresh-cut bouquets. Our lily operation runs from late February through September and during that period we raise between 4000 and 5000 lilies. Each year we bring in new varieties to keep the fun in collecting lilies. Over the course of a year we will be bringing over 30 different varieties to market. Check our What's New section for this years beauties.
Our "TLC" Growing Process
Our bulbs come directly from Amsterdam, arriving in frozen clumps. We then plant the bulbs in crates using our own soil blend and place them in a root cellar where they begin the growth process in a sunless, constant 60 degree environment to promote strong root growth. After the fragile asparagus-like sprouts push a few inches above the soil they are slowly introduced to sunlight, then moved to the greenhouse to mature. Automated drip irrigation and hands-on daily monitoring provide the optimum environment to produce hearty plants and beautiful blooms.
Fresh to You Each Market
By planting weekly we are able to bring mature blooming plants to you from spring through fall. This is called "forcing" the plants. Basically bulbs kick into their growth cycle after the last freeze and when the first few days of spring warm the soil. We simulate this cycle for you by using the "forcing" process.

As a way of saying "Thank You" to our regular bouquet customers we now have a "Frequent Flower" club. Make sure you get a Rainbow Bucks card and have it checked off each time you get one of our fresh-cut bouquets. The fine print says:
Validated for each standard price bouquet purchased during _2011__. Redeem for $5.00 Off of your Next purchase of $10.00 or more.
Rainbow Farm bouquets are assembled from fresh-cut flowers and native Eastern Shore greens right there at the market. Wanda always has a pre-made selection for you to choose from but will gladly make one just for you from any flowers you see at the stand. These bouquets continue to provide you with their beauty all week long with buds opening up to freshen your arrangement right on your table. Keep the water fresh to get the most from your bouquet.

This Spring we were surprised to find that voles had attacked the nursery wiping out several hundred of the flowers we use in bouquets. The best line of defense for voles is the domestic cat. Lizzy shown here will stand guard over a critters hole for hours. Liz and her teammate Milli proudly leave their catch by the back door.
Look for an upcoming article in Garden TIps that shows how to protect your garden from these cute little varmints.

We have had many requests from our Farmers Market customers for us to accept credit cards when purchasing a lot of plants, cut-flowers or bouquets. It is amazing how fast the cash dissappears as you wander the market stalls and stock up on some really great local cheeses, seafood, fresh breads, mushrooms, and produce. You will be glad to hear we are now accepting credit cards for orders of $20.00 or more at the markets.
Geeks that we are we have started using a new device that lets us scan your card on our smartphone. It uses a secure, encrypted connection and you get a receipt vis e-mail. We will also gladly give you a paper receipt if you desire.

It is a little bit of a slow process as we have to enter your email address on the smartphone keyboard and we old geeks were brought up with real keyboards. If we are real busy we may ask you to stop back but we will hold your flowers for you.
It is also a little strange in that you sign for it using your fingertip as a pencil on the touch screen. Sharpen your fingernail if you want to actually be able to read it.
